The flower of the fern (Perun’s color) is one of the oldest solar ornamental symbols in the Slavic religious culture. The fern flower is a kind of eight-pointed swastika, which our ancestors attached special esoteric significance. Like any swastika symbol, the flower of the fern personified the all-conquering power of solar energy, the energy of life that feeds all that exists.
The flower of the fern, which is also called Perun’s color, is associated with an ancient legend telling about the forbidden love of Semargle, the first protector of the sunny throne, and the Blessed Virgin, the gentle and kind goddess of summer nights. Semargle and the Blessed One loved each other, but could not be together, since the sun defender did not have the right to absent himself from the light for a moment. But once Semargle let the feelings overcome the debt, and from that day (the day of the autumnal equinox, September 21) the night gradually began to increase, defeating the day. Soon, two children were born to Kupalnitsa and the heavenly warrior, who were named Kostroma and Kupala. On the day of their birth, Perun presented his brother’s children with a gift – a freshened fern. In this magical flower, Perun invested a particle of his strength.
The Slavs believed that the Perunov color is able to protect its owner from all sorts of ailments, damage and evil eye. The flower of the fern destroys all dark forces without exception, so the owner of this artefact is impenetrable and invulnerable to evil. In addition, the flower of the fern allows its owner to find hidden treasures in the earth, and also fulfills the most cherished and sincere desires.
